You have to see and hear the language a lot if you want to be able to use it properly. This is exposure, or immersion or comprehensible input – whatever you want to call it. One approach involves absorbing loads of English just through reading and listening. I suppose the thing is, there are two approaches that seem to be important in learning a language. There are plenty of other things you need to do, including regular speaking practice, writing, plenty of reading, using a systematic approach to learning vocabulary, taking time to understand how grammar works. Watching lots of content in English is definitely a good idea, although of course that might not be enough on its own. People say it all the time, and I do think there is some truth in this.
